449: Stop Standing On The Edge And Finally Dive Into The Life You Want (Summer Shift Week 3)

About this episode

Stuck Standing on the Edge of Something Great... But Scared to Jump In?

Be honest, what dream, goal, or opportunity have you been standing beside—knowing you want it, but feeling too afraid to take the next step?

In Week 3 of the Summer Shift series, Kevin Lowe explores the space where so many people get stuck: the gap between knowing what you want and actually going after it. Whether it's a career move, a health goal, starting a business, launching a creative project, or pursuing a long-held dream, fear often keeps us standing on the edge waiting for the perfect moment.

Using the simple but powerful analogy of standing beside a cold swimming pool, Kevin shares why the hardest part is often getting started—and why waiting until you feel ready may be the very thing holding you back.

In This Episode, You'll Discover

✅ Why fear feels strongest before you take action

✅ How comfort and familiarity can quietly keep you stuck

✅ The difference between taking a massive leap and taking a meaningful next step

✅ Why progress doesn't require having everything figured out

✅ A simple challenge to help you move from dreaming to doing

Kevin Lowe: I want you to picture it's the hottest day of the whole year, middle of summer. It's maybe like right now.

<v Speaker1>Middle of June, and it's sweltering outside.

Kevin Lowe: But thankfully, you're at the pool.

<v Speaker1>You're at the spring. You're at the river. You got water there,

Kevin Lowe: And everybody you know.

<v Speaker1>They're already in the water. You got your friends on the pool float,

Kevin Lowe: People swimming around, laughing, splashing.

<v Speaker1>And yet you, you're still standing on the side

Kevin Lowe: Of the pool.

<v Speaker1>You got your toes right to the edge. You've dipped your big toe in the water. But oh my gosh,

Kevin Lowe: That water is cold.

<v Speaker1>And you know it's cold. And so you keep standing there.

Kevin Lowe: You keep delaying, putting it off, thinking to yourself that you just want to do it.

Kevin Lowe: Why can't I just do it?

<v Speaker1>And so you keep standing there.

Kevin Lowe: And your friends, they're yelling at you, get in the water. It's fine.

<v Speaker1>It warms up as soon as you get in. My friend, this scene, this scenario, it's not a pool problem.

<v Speaker1>It's not a cold water problem. It's a life problem.

<v Speaker1>Because my friend, if you've been standing on the edge of something that you've been wanting,

Kevin Lowe: But you've been too scared to actually go for it.

Kevin Lowe: Well, today is for you.

<v Speaker1>My name is Kevin Lowe,

Kevin Lowe: And this is Grit.

<v Speaker1>Grace, and Inspiration. And today, episode 449, we are in our

Kevin Lowe: Third week of the Summer Shift series. This series is here to help.

<v Speaker1>You make one meaningful shift each week to hopefully move the needle forward in your entire year.

Kevin Lowe: Because I believe the.

<v Speaker1>Summer is a

Kevin Lowe: Perfect opportunity that we can have some fun.

<v Speaker1>But we can also make some meaningful gains in our life. And so that's what

Kevin Lowe: I'm doing inside of our Summer Shift series.

<v Speaker1>Again, this is week number three

Kevin Lowe: Of a 12-week series.

<v Speaker1>In which we're helping you move the needle forward.

Kevin Lowe: Now, in relation to today's topic.

<v Speaker1>In regards to week number three, standing on the edge of the pool, <v Speaker1>the part where most people get

Kevin Lowe: Stuck in life.

<v Speaker1>Is the in-between. They get stuck in this in-between.

<v Speaker1>They know what they want, but they don't actually ever pursue it.

<v Speaker1>Or maybe they pursue it to a degree, but they never actually take that meaningful step.

<v Speaker1>If we want to go back to our pool analogy, yeah, you put on the bathing suit, <v Speaker1>you went to the pool, but you're standing at the edge of the pool.

<v Speaker1>You've never actually dove in.

Kevin Lowe: That gap, that space in between.

<v Speaker1>That's where fear comes into play.

Kevin Lowe: Because we all start thinking about the what if scenarios.

<v Speaker1>What if it goes wrong? What if I fail? What if the water is too cold?

<v Speaker1>What if I can't swim once I jump in?

Kevin Lowe: Or what about that horrible feeling?

<v Speaker1>What about people who are going to judge me?

Kevin Lowe: Who, when they learn of what I'm trying to do, what I want to accomplish, what my dream is.

<v Speaker1>What are they going to think about me? So instead, what happens so many times <v Speaker1>is we stay standing there on the edge, <v Speaker1>stuck in the in-between, in this space in between what we want and actually <v Speaker1>achieving it, actually making it come true. Maybe we think about

Kevin Lowe: The idea when we're laying in bed at night and we say to ourselves, tomorrow is going to be the day.

<v Speaker1>Tomorrow I'm going to do the thing.

<v Speaker1>And then we never do because

Kevin Lowe: We get scared.

<v Speaker1>And we think we'll just put it off.

<v Speaker1>You stand there on the edge while everybody else is in the pool having fun doing the thing,

Kevin Lowe: Yet you just can't make yourself do it.

<v Speaker1>If you have

Kevin Lowe: Found yourself in this.

<v Speaker1>Situation with anything that you can imagine,

Kevin Lowe: Whether it's something related to your career.

<v Speaker1>Your own health goals, anything and everything, if you found yourself stuck <v Speaker1>in the in-between, you know what you want,

Kevin Lowe: But you're too scared to go get it.

<v Speaker1>And maybe you haven't

Kevin Lowe: Even said to yourself that it's actually fear.

<v Speaker1>Or you being scared,

Kevin Lowe: Instead, you've honestly.

<v Speaker1>Been making up

Kevin Lowe: Excuses that hold you back about how it's not the right time, that, uh, that's for people who are younger than me.

<v Speaker1>I'm too old.

Kevin Lowe: My opportunity has already passed. If that's you, well, my friend, this is meant for you.

<v Speaker1>What I'm saying today is meant for the person who is stuck in this in-between.

<v Speaker1>It's the exact same scenario as you standing on the edge of the pool,

Kevin Lowe: Too scared to jump in, too fearful of the cold water.

<v Speaker1>And let's be honest,

Kevin Lowe: Life, I think maybe the human nature.

<v Speaker1>It's there to protect us, but it's also getting in our way.

<v Speaker1>Because when you're standing on the edge of the pool, you already know what's comfortable.

Kevin Lowe: Yeah, maybe the pool deck might be hot.

<v Speaker1>But it's comfortable. You, your mind, your body would rather just remain in what's comfortable,

Kevin Lowe: What it already knows.

<v Speaker1>Than it would to experience the unknown. Because at the end of the day, isn't that always

Kevin Lowe: The thing that holds us back?

<v Speaker1>It's the unknown, the uncertainty of it all.

Kevin Lowe: It's easier to just stay comfortable.

<v Speaker1>To stay in our routine,

Kevin Lowe: To not venture out.

<v Speaker1>Because if we venture too far, then what happens? What's next?

Kevin Lowe: Now, the thing that I want you to understand.

<v Speaker1>Though, is that looking at this metaphor of the swimming pool, the water is

Kevin Lowe: Always coldest right at first.

<v Speaker1>When you dip your big toe in, of course, it's freezing.

Kevin Lowe: But the people who get to have fun.

<v Speaker1>Who get to enjoy it, who get to reap

Kevin Lowe: The rewards of it.

<v Speaker1>Are the people who dove in anyways.

Kevin Lowe: The people who realized, you know what? Yeah, it's going to be cold.

<v Speaker1>I bet it's freezing. But after a few minutes,

Kevin Lowe: I'm going to get used to it.

<v Speaker1>And I'm going to get to enjoy this day. I'm not going to be standing there wondering,

Kevin Lowe: What if?

<v Speaker1>I'm going to be living it out.

Kevin Lowe: I'm going to get to end this day with a smile on my face instead of regret.

Kevin Lowe: That's what I want for you. I don't want you to regret your life.

<v Speaker1>I don't want you to regret the things that you didn't do,

Kevin Lowe: The choices you didn't make or the choices you did make to never actually get in the water.

Kevin Lowe: You decided that you were OK.

Kevin Lowe: Well, you didn't decide that.

<v Speaker1>You pretended it.

Kevin Lowe: You made yourself believe that.

<v Speaker1>You didn't really

Kevin Lowe: Want to get in the water after all. You just did your hair.

Kevin Lowe: You didn't want to mess up your outfit, even though you had on a bathing suit.

<v Speaker1>You didn't want

Kevin Lowe: It to get.

<v Speaker1>Impacted by the chlorine.

Kevin Lowe: So you make all these crazy excuses as to why getting in the water just wasn't the right thing.

Kevin Lowe: Instead, you sit back down in the lawn chair and you're sweating.

<v Speaker1>You're hating life. and yet the whole time you're lying to yourself

Kevin Lowe: That you want it like this.

<v Speaker1>My friend, that is not what living is about.

<v Speaker1>Life, living, it's about taking chances, about diving in even when the water is cold.

<v Speaker1>It's about going for it.

Kevin Lowe: We only get one opportunity of this life. Every day is a gift, is a blessing.

<v Speaker1>We never know what tomorrow will hold.

Kevin Lowe: So if you find yourself at the edge of the pool today.

<v Speaker1>My friend, for goodness sakes, go ahead and jump.

Kevin Lowe: Now, the breakthrough that I want you to really understand.

<v Speaker1>If you find yourself in this in-between, you're standing there unable to move <v Speaker1>forward, I want you to understand this important lesson that I'm about to teach.

Kevin Lowe: This important thing I'm about to try to get through is the simple fact that it doesn't take a monumental leap to.

<v Speaker1>Make a big

Kevin Lowe: Impact.

<v Speaker1>You don't even

Kevin Lowe: Have to have it all figured out. You don't have to even feel ready.

<v Speaker1>You literally need one thing, one simple decision, a decision that you're just <v Speaker1>going to take the next step.

<v Speaker1>And when you make a decision to take just the next step, you eliminate the fear. You no longer give it

Kevin Lowe: Permission to have control over your life.

<v Speaker1>Over your destiny, because you're going to take the next step.

Kevin Lowe: Now, the next step doesn't have to be monumental.

Kevin Lowe: You don't have to climb up to the high dive and jump in the pool that way.

<v Speaker1>No, you can just slip in to the pool from the edge. But the important part is that whatever

Kevin Lowe: The step is.

<v Speaker1>That it's actually meaningful, that it means something. It can be small,

Kevin Lowe: But not so small as to just dip your toe in the water again.

<v Speaker1>No, you have to actually get in the water.

Kevin Lowe: The step you take has to be meaningful, but it doesn't have to be massive.

Kevin Lowe: So for this week in our summer shift series.

<v Speaker1>I'm going to leave you with this challenge. I want you to name the pool that <v Speaker1>you've been standing beside. The thing

Kevin Lowe: That I keep.

<v Speaker1>Saying that I'm going to do when conditions are perfect, when I'm ready, what is that?

Kevin Lowe: What is that thing that you lie awake at night thinking about, dreaming about?

<v Speaker1>And yet when daylight comes, you find yourself making excuses. What is it for you?

Kevin Lowe: What is that thing?

<v Speaker1>What is your swimming pool that you want so badly

Kevin Lowe: To dive into, to get to experience.

<v Speaker1>And yet you've been holding back from? Name it.

Kevin Lowe: Declare it. Say it out loud.

<v Speaker1>Tell it to a friend. Tell it to your family. Let your dream be known.

Kevin Lowe: And then the second part of this challenge is I want you to figure out what is the next step you need to take to make it come true.

<v Speaker1>Is it you picking up the phone and making the phone call? Is it you sending the email?

<v Speaker1>Is it you signing up for the class? Is it you hitting record on a podcast?

Kevin Lowe: Whatever it is, I want you to figure it out.

Kevin Lowe: I want you to ask yourself, what is the next step I have to take?

<v Speaker1>And of course, that

Kevin Lowe: Comes after declaring exactly what it is that you want.

Kevin Lowe: My friend, I want you to have the life that you were meant to have. I believe me and you.

<v Speaker1>We were meant to thrive in this life.

Kevin Lowe: And that's what I'm here to do is to encourage you to indeed stop just living and start thriving.

<v Speaker1>Starting right now, starting today by diving into the pool and getting to finally <v Speaker1>experience that amazing sensation for yourself.

Kevin Lowe: My friend, I'm Kevin Lowe.

<v Speaker1>This is Grit, Grace, and Inspiration. Again, we are

Kevin Lowe: In the midst of the Summer Shift series.

<v Speaker1>Helping you to make

Kevin Lowe: Some monumental gains in your life each week throughout the summer.
