458: Time Is The One Thing You’ll Never Get Back: How Are You Spending Yours? (Summer Shift Week 11)

About this episode

What if the life you’re working so hard to build is causing you to miss the life you’re already living?

There’s nothing wrong with chasing bigger goals—but when success starts costing you the moments, people, and time that matter most, it may be time to rethink what you’re really chasing.

It’s easy to tell yourself that you’ll slow down later. You’ll spend more time with the people you love once work settles down. You’ll enjoy life once you reach the next goal. You’ll finally feel successful when you get there.

But what happens when “there” keeps moving?

You can earn more money. Set another goal. Try again after a failure. But today only happens once—and the time you spend can never be put back.

What’s It All About?

In Week 11 of the 12-week Summer Shift Series, Kevin asks one of those uncomfortable questions that can change the way you see everything:

"What am I doing all of this for?"

To answer it, he shares the story of a fellow podcaster and successful entrepreneur named Adam Schaeuble who found himself in one of those high-level mastermind groups and on one particular day, the numbers started flying.

One by one, the numbers got bigger. One person was aiming to hit 6-figures this year. Another person had already crushed last year's numbers by more than double. The guy in the corner explained that he was on track to blow pass 1 million by year's end.

But then it came around to our guy Adam.

And instead of naming another financial goal, he gave an answer that changed the entire conversation.

His definition of success wasn’t built around how much money he could make.

It was built around how he wanted to spend his life.

That story leads to an even bigger realization about the limited number of ordinary days, family moments, summers, conversations, and experiences any of us actually get.

This episode isn’t telling you to stop chasing big dreams.

It’s challenging you to make sure that while you’re building the life you want tomorrow, you don’t accidentally miss the life you have today.

Kevin Lowe: Have you ever stopped and asked yourself, what am I doing all of this for?

Kevin Lowe: I'm talking about the work, the goals, the money, the trying to get ahead, all the things that you keep pursuing, the things that keep you pushing forward, the things that give you, a desire to get up and push forward each and every morning, even when it's a Wednesday and you're tired and you're over it, yet you keep pushing harder and harder.

Kevin Lowe: But have you ever actually stopped and asked yourself the big questions, the hard questions? What is it all for?

Kevin Lowe: Why am I doing what I'm doing? Why am I pursuing this goal?

Kevin Lowe: And the reason I bring this up is because sometimes we can get so focused on achieving goals, on being successful, on creating that perfect life, that we forget to actually enjoy the life that we're building, to actually enjoy the life that we're living.

Kevin Lowe: And that, my friend, is today's summer shift.

Kevin Lowe: Today, we are focusing on you getting your priorities in check.

Kevin Lowe: This is week 11 of our 12-week summer shift series.

Kevin Lowe: My friend, we are winding down, as is evident, with the news this morning.

Kevin Lowe: I was listening to the news and talking about school, being back in session, talking about kids, buses, all the things that signal one thing, Summer vacation is over.

Kevin Lowe: Now, of course, this is week 11 of a 12-week Summer Shift series.

Kevin Lowe: So as far as this podcast goes, summer is still cranking away.

Kevin Lowe: And so, my friend, if you've been enjoying the Summer Shift series, well, please be sure that you stay tuned because next week is our final week of the Summer Shift series.

Kevin Lowe: Now, who am I? Well, I am your host, Kevin Lowe, the creator and host of Grace and Inspiration, a podcast serving a mission to inspire you to enjoy life a little more, to focus on the little things.

Kevin Lowe: Because as a guy who became blind suddenly back in 2003, when I was just 17 years old, I learned about the important things in life.

Kevin Lowe: And oftentimes, the things that we think are important actually aren't.

Kevin Lowe: And the things that we think are little actually become everything.

Kevin Lowe: And that directly relates to today's topic.

Kevin Lowe: A few years ago, I had the opportunity to interview a few of my favorite people in the podcast space.

Kevin Lowe: And on the top of that list is a guy who's become a friend.

Kevin Lowe: His name's Adam. He's the host of Podcasting Business School.

Kevin Lowe: And the thing that stuck out about Adam is how he has his priorities in check.

Kevin Lowe: And there's one story that I heard Adam tell that I want to share with you.

Kevin Lowe: Adam is a guy who's built a very successful business for himself, all based around his podcast.

Kevin Lowe: And what's powerful, though, is where his priorities really are.

Kevin Lowe: The story that Adam told was that he was in a mastermind, one of these big high-level masterminds, the kind of place where you meet up, I don't know, once a week, once a month, with other people, like-minded people, all achieving more, wanting more.

Kevin Lowe: And in this particular meeting, people were going around the room, and they were sharing their goals, their dreams.

Kevin Lowe: And of course, in a room like this, what do you think those goals were?

Kevin Lowe: Well, they were dollar signs, money in the bank.

Kevin Lowe: You had one guy who he was hoping to hit his first six figures this year.

Kevin Lowe: You had another person in the room who had just crossed $1 million.

Kevin Lowe: And of course, like a competition, everybody goes down the line.

Kevin Lowe: Everybody shares a bigger number.

Kevin Lowe: A bigger amount of money that they want to make.

Kevin Lowe: And then the room fell silent when Adam's turn was up.

Kevin Lowe: Because when everybody else was focused on the dollar sign, when everybody else was focused on the goal they were chasing after, Adam flipped the script.

Kevin Lowe: Adam focused on the life he had, the life he was living.

Kevin Lowe: His goal, it wasn't a dollar sign. Instead, it was time. It was freedom.

Kevin Lowe: He wanted to work no more than three days a week.

Kevin Lowe: He wanted to be able to take his kids to school every morning and pick them up every afternoon.

Kevin Lowe: He wanted to be sure that he never missed a single basketball game for his son.

Kevin Lowe: He wanted to show up in his life in a way that made him proud.

Kevin Lowe: He wanted to be, first and foremost, a father.

Kevin Lowe: A husband, after all of that, then entrepreneur, then podcaster, then businessman.

Kevin Lowe: But the priority is his family.

Kevin Lowe: That, my friend, is powerful. And it took the room by surprise.

Kevin Lowe: And I have to believe that it probably had a lot of people thinking, wow, maybe my priorities are all messed up.

Kevin Lowe: Because this guy, he is extremely successful. Don't think that Adam doesn't chase hard.

Kevin Lowe: Don't think that he's not built an amazing business for himself. He has.

Kevin Lowe: But he put the priorities in line. And that's what I want for you.

Kevin Lowe: That's the shift that I want you to make today, right now, is deciding in your life what is it that really and truly matters.

Kevin Lowe: So my friend, what I want you to understand today is I want you to focus on your goals.

Kevin Lowe: I want you to have big things that you want for your life.

Kevin Lowe: But I want you to understand that the life you're living should be enjoyed, that you should prioritize the things that really and truly matter.

Kevin Lowe: Because the fact is true. None of us know when life is going to be over for us.

Kevin Lowe: It could be today. It could be tomorrow. It could be 35 years from now. None of us know.

Kevin Lowe: But there's one thing that we do know, is that time is something we can never get back.

Kevin Lowe: Today, it only happens today. Come tomorrow, it's over.

Kevin Lowe: And in terms of the season we're in right now, as I said, summer's coming to a close. Kids are going back to school.

Kevin Lowe: Did you know, if you're a parent, you only have 18 summers with your kids before they're adults?

Kevin Lowe: 18 summers That's all you get with your kids, My friend That is the reminder That I hope you take home Is that every day Needs to be cherished Every day deserves You to have your priorities in check, So keep chasing the big goals, keep dreaming big dreams, keep pursuing them.

Kevin Lowe: I'm never going to try to tell you otherwise, but I just want to be sure that along the journey, that you're being sure that you're creating a life that you love, that you're showing up for the people and the things that matter most.

Kevin Lowe: Because as I said, the little things are actually the big things.

Kevin Lowe: My friend, if you've enjoyed today's episode, if you've thought of somebody who maybe in your life needs this reminder, well, consider sharing today's episode with them.

Kevin Lowe: That would mean the world to me, and hopefully it will mean the world to them.

Kevin Lowe: Let us build up one another. It's kind of like that infamous saying, a rising tide lifts all boats.

Kevin Lowe: So let's rise up together. Let's make some shifts, some meaningful gains in our life.

Kevin Lowe: And my friend, just because summer is coming to a close, we've got one of the most beautiful times of year ahead.

Kevin Lowe: The fall, temperatures cooling down, weather turning a little chillier, which for me, I am all about it.

Kevin Lowe: So my friend, don't get discouraged. Don't get upset that summer is coming to a close.

Kevin Lowe: Instead, we've just got a new chapter of the year getting ready to kick off.

Kevin Lowe: But until then, this is great grace and inspiration. I'm your host, Kevin Lowe, and my friend, I will see you next week for our 12th episode in our 12-week Summer Shift series.
